Hi, everyone! I wanted to open up this week's letter with a thank you. Thanks for inviting me into your inbox! Since this is the first edition of the Fashion Physics newsletter, I hope you enjoy what you see and keep subscribing for more fun content you won't catch on the blog.

To start off, I realized recently that pearl jewelry is not cool anymore. It is rare that I see women sporting pearl earrings or necklaces these days. Every now and then I'll see them out in the wild, but it is usually by an older woman.

When I think about pearls, I instantly think of the 50's. Next, I think of my grandmother and the pair of pearl earrings she used to wear for special occasions. I can't remember my mother ever wearing pearls and I definitely haven't either. So what happened? Of course trends come and go, but some trends become classics. Like jeans. Denim was definitely a trend when it first appeared on the fashion scene, but now everyone wears them and they always will. Maybe pearls didn't become as classic as denim, but they still give us that feeling of timelessness and have a sentimental quality to them.

But, somehow, to me it feels like pearls don't fit into a modern world. There's something about them that looks stiff. They're obviously sophisticated and refined, but maybe too much so for most Americans, who've become so casual and prefer being comfy. I honestly get away with wearing a hoodie to my corporate office. That's how low we are on the cozy scale. Pearls are a bit of a scary throwback when you see them out. It's not too far below how shocking it would be to see someone out wearing gaucho pants.

With all of that being said though, we absolutely must make pearls cool again. Despite me coming in hot and more or less dissing them, they are still important! They are a classic style and deserve to be worn and wanted. However out of place they may look, there is always a way to revive them. Jewelry brand, Shami, has a few pearl offerings that have a more modern look to them that I can get behind, but I hope more jewelry brands start to revitalize pearls and target them to younger consumers.

If you know of any brands who have interesting or unique takes on pearl jewelry or want to chime in, feel free to reply or to shoot me an email! If you couldn't tell, I love to talk. See you next week!
